This project captures and reconstructs patterns of user
behaviour through meticulous observation. We established
a new standard for family travel through the synergy of
FFD Lab’s design methodology and RAWROW’s functional philosophy.

Premiered at the DDP Seoul Young Designers' Fair (2025),
R-ride addresses the inherent instability often encountered during
family travel. Extensive user observations and ethnographic
interviews identified this lack of stability as a primary pain point,
necessitating a design solution rooted in rigorous user insight.
These findings were translated into a specialised saddle geometry,
specifically developed as a luggage-mounted accessory. The design
ensures a seamless and intuitive integration with RAWROW's functional
philosophy, prioritising both ergonomic comfort and aesthetic cohesion.
Recognised for its innovative approach to user-centred travel mobility,
the project demonstrates a sophisticated synthesis of
ethnographic research and formal precision.

The project was initiated by capturing and reconstructing
nuanced patterns of user behaviour through meticulous on-site
observation. By conducting in-depth interviews with ten families,
the research identified a critical lack of stability as a primary
pain point in contemporary family travel. This foundational stage
revealed that luggage is perceived not merely as a storage container,
but as an interactive, rideable mobility companion for the child.
Such authentic user voices necessitated a design methodology
rooted in rigorous ethnographic enquiry to establish
a new standard for the travel experience.

“Walking can be a struggle for children, so we often end up sitting them on our luggage. There are ride-on suitcases designed for children, but they tend to have a short lifespan. I would rather seat my child on my own suitcase.”

Moving beyond superficial aesthetics, the design process involved
an extensive study of the subconscious behavioural patterns of
71 young travellers. This large-scale research confirmed that children
naturally interact with luggage as a ‘rideable companion’, often
treating the object with the same emotional proximity as a living animal.
By identifying these specific behavioural cues, FFD Lab sought to
address the inherent instability of conventional ride-on habits through
data-driven design. This analytical approach effectively bridges the
gap between functional travel equipment and the profound
emotional needs of the child.

Core Features
R-ride enhances stability and comfort by fundamentally redefining
the physical interaction between the child and the luggage.
A high-tension strap and intuitive buckle system ensure a secure
and effortless attachment to the suitcase, while the integrated
front grip handle and rear safety support provide a stable,
slip-resistant seat. These precision-engineered features work
in tandem to ensure that the journey is no longer a stressful
transit but a secure and joyful exploration for both parent and child.

To elevate the tactile experience, soft-touch side covers protect
the child from the cold, rigid surface of the luggage,
transforming a standard suitcase into a refined travel solution.

The development of R-ride was defined by a relentless iterative process,
transitioning from initial paper models to fully functional, suede-finished
prototypes. Every curve, radius, and attachment point underwent rigorous
testing to ensure a seamless fit as a third-party accessory
specifically for RAWROW suitcases.

This meticulous craft validated the ergonomic scale and tactile durability required of a dependable travel companion, proving that the objective was to develop a high-performance extension of the travel experience rather than a mere add-on.

To transform the transit process into a more delightful exploration,
a range of animal character options was introduced to resonate with
children’s vivid imaginations. Through extensive feedback and
preference testing, four distinct characters 'the Rabbit, Turtle, Tiger,
and Dragon' were selected as the most favoured options.
These customisable features allow children to select their preferred
travel partner, adding a necessary emotional dimension to the
functional design. This evidence-based selection process ensures
that the child engages more actively and joyfully with
their travel environment.

The R-ride project was officially unveiled at the
DDP Seoul Young Designers' Fair (2025), providing a platform for
young visitors to experience the functional prototype first-hand.
This live demonstration enabled direct interaction with the
specialised saddle geometry, validating the ergonomic comfort
and stability developed through months of refinement.
The overwhelmingly positive response from both parents and
children confirmed that the design successfully materialises
a new standard for family-centric mobility, reinforcing the
product's role as a trusted and sophisticated travel solution.

Created in collaboration with RAWROW, this exhibition was
a journey to realise a space where children’s imagination could
come to life. The imaginary animals drawn by the children formed
new scenes within the exhibition, within an environment designed
for active participation, interaction, and lingering.
This immersive journey concluded in a space shaped and shared
with the children, effectively bridging the gap between
abstract concepts and tangible, communal experiences.
