In 2025, FFD Lab collaborated with FLIPJOY from the early stages
of the brand’s journey to create its first signature product.
Translating FLIPJOY’s philosophy and values into a tangible product,
we reimagined the familiar conventions of flip-flops and established
a distinctive design direction and identity for the brand.

FFD Lab developed a modular structure that allows
one pair to take on different expressions. The outsole, straps and clips
can each be detached and replaced, giving users the freedom to combine
elements and shape the product in their own way.

With three outsole colors, six strap colors, and nine clip colors,
the components can be freely combined to create a total of 162 different styles.

We explored a range of connection systems through iterative prototyping and testing. Each approach was assembled, disassembled and evaluated to find the right balance between intuitive replacement and a secure, stable fit.

We refined each detail of the connection, from the force and
movement required for replacement to the tactile feedback of attaching
and detaching each component. Through repeated testing, we brought
form, structure and usability together, turning FLIPJOY’s idea into a
simple and intuitive interaction.
